Retro Stuff
I grew up with the web of the 90s and early 2000s. With Geocities, FTP, Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Navigator, CuteFTP, Winamp, Napster and personal websites. I often get nostalgic about all that. If you do too, you might enjoy this collection of things from that era.
Built With
The design of this website itself is a tribute to websites of that period.
Most of the animated GIFs on this site are from Internet Archive's GIFcities, a searchable repository of animated gifs from old Geocities websites.
Every single page is hand-coded and hand-linked, right down to the RSS feed (if you find errors, please let me know). It's hosted on Neocities, a modern-day Geocities-like web host where you can find and follow lots of other old-school websites.
Websites and Resources
These are websites related to either archiving, documenting or keeping alive the spirit of the 90s/early 2000s web and computer culture:
- Internet Archive, a library of millions of free books, movies, software, music and more. You can even play old games and listen to entire albums!
- WayBack Machine, lets you travel back in time and browse saved versions of most public websites since 1997. Maybe your old site is still there!
- Windows 98 Icon Viewer, where you can browse and download all of the wonderfully detailed little icons from Windows 98 (thanks to Alex Meub).
- Smart Guestbook, a free hosted guestbook like the one on this website.
- Neocities Websites, a searchable directory of all Neocities websites.
- Wiby, a search engine for simple, no-frills webpages with interesting content. Also has a surprise me link that takes you to a random site.
- Virtual Vault, a collection of links to cool, weird and interesting webpages, most of which have an "old school internet" feel to them.
- The Geocities Gallery, a restored gallery of the archived Geocities sites, sorted by neighborhood. Lots of gemsd: a complete guide to European butterflies (in German), a definitive list of commemorative Coca-Cola bottles and MIDI songs to famous TV show/movie soundtracks, and much more!
- Mydora, a continous streaming player that lets you listen to 490,273 recovered/archived songs from MySpace before they were all lost.
- Screenshots from developers & Unix people (2002), if you ever wondered what the desktops of famous computer people looked like in 2002.
- Project Gemini, a new, collaboratively designed internet protocol, which explores the space inbetween gopher and the web. Read FAQ for details.
- Epic Rock Radio, the loudest of all online radios, streaming symphonic, progressive and powermetal non-stop since 2004, run by an old friend.
